Lissa Sue Designs

Hi, I'm Melissa!

Ministry has always been a shared passion for my husband and me, but motherhood (with its nap times and meal times and play times and bed times) recently altered my availability during the day, making my beloved life of youth ministry much more complicated to pursue. My life had changed, but my passion for ministry had not. That’s when a couple close friends suggested I reconsider the use of my babies’ nap times at home to continue designing encouraging and positive messages and graphics, but this time, for everyone--not just for my church family. This little idea couldn't have come at a better time too--my daddy (who gave me my nickname - Lissa Sue) passed away just a couple short months later, and I desperately needed a creative and positive outlet during the quiet hours my little ones were napping to redirect my anxious heart. So after over a decade of working in architecture and designing graphics and t-shirts for ministry events on the side, I opened Lissa Sue Designs on Etsy in the fall of 2017, with the hope that a little joy and encouragement might brighten the lives of all who stumble upon this shop. Goodness knows, the precious folks I have met along the way have been such an encouragement to me!
I find that I doodle and design the encouraging truths my heart needs to be reminded of. Once my hand-lettering is digitized, my shirt printing team at Morrison Monogramming screen prints my designs onto buttery soft tees before I pack them with love and care and send them to you, praying that they bless your day when they arrive.
I've always considered "Words of Affirmation" my love language--maybe that's why I'm so drawn to the idea of sharing words of hope and encouragement through my graphic designs. But what I never could have fully imagined was how blessed and encouraged I would feel learning the heartwarming stories of precious folks who have taken the time to stop by the shop to purchase a gift for a loved one fighting cancer, or for a beloved teacher or mentor. We find that there is truly so much good in our world when we stop and listen to each other's stories.

What do you love most about being a Huntsville maker?

As a Huntsville native, I have watched with wonder as our little Rocket City has exploded with numeric growth in recent years, but it's also been incredible to watch the renaissance of creative thinking and collaboration that has burst onto the scene. The makers here are so supportive of one another, and our world needs more of that!

Thanks for supporting local makers like Emily!
